Sentia Spirits

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the brain's primary inhibitory messenger, responsible for producing calming and relaxing effects. Sentia's approach is to use a patent-pending botanical blend including magnolia bark, sage, orange peel, star anise, ginseng, and black cardamom, chosen for their interaction with that system, to create a functional effect without alcohol. The brand was co-founded by Professor David Nutt, a neuropsychopharmacologist and former government drugs adviser, and operates under parent company GABA Labs, previously known as Alcarelle.

Sentia Red launched in early 2021, followed by Sentia Black in 2022. By 2024, the range had expanded into functional interpretations of other drink formats, adding stout, cider, and cask-style variants to the core spirits lineup. That breadth signals an ambition that goes beyond the spirits shelf: GABA Labs has stated its longer-term goal is to license its functional molecule to the wider drinks industry, positioning Sentia as both a consumer brand and a proof-of-concept for a new ingredient category.

The core GABA spirits sit in the premium bracket, at a significant premium over most AF alternatives. Distribution is primarily direct-to-consumer through the brand's own site, with some availability through specialist AF retailers. Sentia is most likely to appeal to sober-curious drinkers interested in the neuroscience behind the formulation rather than a straightforward spirit substitute. The brand occupies a genuinely distinct space in the AF category: not a flavour replacement for alcohol, but a functional proposition built on a different scientific premise.
