Thatchers
Thatchers is a family-owned cider maker founded in 1904 by William Thatcher at Myrtle Farm in Sandford, Somerset, at the foot of the Mendip Hills. Thatcher began by growing apple trees and making cider to give to the workers on his farm. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, the company has 121 years of cider making behind it and employs 250 people in Somerset.
The farm spans 500 acres of orchard, supplemented by a further 180 acres at Shiplate, and maintains an Exhibition Orchard containing 458 different apple varieties. Thatchers has pioneered a method of growing its apple trees in a hedgerow style, and in 2025 the business planted over 13,000 new trees. At full capacity the press at Myrtle Farm can handle 500 tonnes of apples per day. The site also operates as the UK's biggest processor of blackcurrants.
The company runs on 100% renewable electricity and applies sustainable practices across the farm. Its website provides nutritional information for the range.
Alongside its alcoholic cider portfolio, Thatchers produces an alcohol-free line for designated drivers and sober-curious drinkers who want to stay in the cider category. The range has a broad retail footprint and is available direct from the brand's own website.
