Sober Brummie

Birmingham Brewing Company is an independent micro-brewery based in Stirchley in south Birmingham, operating a taproom alongside the production facility. That taproom has been central to the brewery's community presence since 2016. Sober Brummie is the brewery's dedicated AF sub-brand, beginning with a pale ale and expanding to cover stouts and pilsners. Every beer in the Sober Brummie range is vegan and gluten-free, a standard the parent brewery applies across its entire catalogue rather than treating it as a property specific to the alcohol-free line.

The production approach is the most distinctive aspect of the brand. Sober Brummie uses a yeast that does not ferment sugars into alcohol, meaning the beer is alcohol-free from the moment fermentation begins. This differs from dealcoholisation, where beer is brewed at full strength and then has the alcohol removed after the fact. At Sober Brummie, the beer is alcohol-free as a direct result of how the fermentation works, not through any post-production extraction. The brewery is clear about this distinction.

Paul Zaylor founded Birmingham Brewing Company in 2016 with a focus on the city's drinking community, and the Sober Brummie name is direct about that local identity. The brand is openly a Birmingham product from a Birmingham brewery. Distribution extends beyond the taproom through direct online sales and specialist alcohol-free retailers, making the range accessible to sober-curious drinkers outside the city.
