Bitburger Drive
Bitburger Drive is the alcohol-free pilsner line from Bitburger, a German brewery founded in 1817 by Johann Peter Wallenborn in Bitburg, in the Eifel region of Germany. The brewery has remained family-owned across seven generations, placing it among the more unusual examples of long-term private stewardship in European lager production.
Bitburger launched its first AF beer under the Drive name in 1992, an early move at a time when few mainstream breweries had considered the segment seriously. The 0.0% line is brewed to the same specification as the full-strength Bitburger Pilsner before being dealcoholised, meaning brewed at full strength and then the alcohol removed. The removal uses vacuum distillation, a process that operates at reduced pressure to lower the boiling point and protect the hop aromatics that a conventional high-temperature process would damage. Hops come from the Holsthum growing area within the Eifel National Park, using a proprietary blend the brewery calls Siegelhopfen. Brewing water is drawn from deep wells in the Bitburg reservoir, sunk into geological formations over 300 million years old.
Bitburger exports to more than 60 countries and holds a long-standing partnership with the German Football Association, giving the brand sustained visibility among fitness-focused drinkers for whom the AF category sits naturally alongside active and sport-adjacent occasions. The Drive name has been maintained as the primary export identity across international markets for more than thirty years. Distribution runs primarily through specialist alcohol-free retailers rather than mainstream supermarket channels in most markets.
For a pilsner backed by two centuries of brewing heritage, Drive's position in the AF market rests on provenance and technical specificity rather than the kind of narrative positioning that newer AF brands tend to rely on. That combination of ingredient sourcing detail and a documented production process gives it a different appeal from the major-brand AF extensions that dominate supermarket shelf space.
