Estrella Levante
Murcia's regional beer has been going since 1963, when Estrella de Levante was founded in Espinardo on the outskirts of the city. The name translates loosely as "Star of the East," a nod to the Levante region of southeastern Spain. It started life under German ownership, passed through Cruzcampo, Guinness, and eventually landed with S.A. Damm in 1999 when Heineken was required to divest regional assets as a condition of acquiring Cruzcampo. Today it sits alongside Victoria and Keler in Damm's portfolio of Spanish regional brands.
The brewery has remained in Espinardo throughout all those ownership changes, and the beer retains a distinctly local identity. Estrella de Levante is a straightforward pilsner lager, positioned as the everyday beer of Murcia rather than a craft statement. The regional loyalty runs deep: it's the kind of beer you'd order automatically at a bar in the city.
Their alcohol-free range includes Levante 0.0, a dealcoholised version of the classic lager, and a Tostada 0.0, brewed with toasted malts that give it a slightly darker, nuttier character than the standard. Both use a dealcoholisation process that also recovers aromas, which keeps them closer to the original than many zero-percent lagers manage.
In the UK, Estrella Levante's alcohol-free beers are available through specialist online retailers rather than mainstream supermarkets. They sit at the value end of the imported AF beer market, and the Tostada in particular offers something a bit different for drinkers who want something beyond the standard pale lager format.
