Sagres
Sagres is one of Portugal's two dominant lager brands, the other being Super Bock, and the rivalry between them is a fixture of Portuguese culture. The brand was created in 1940 by Sociedade Central de Cervejas, a brewery founded in Lisbon in 1934, and named after the historic coastal town of Sagres in the Algarve. Since 2008, the business has been part of the Heineken group.
The core Sagres lager is a pale, clean, uncomplicated beer typical of Southern European brewing: light on the palate, refreshing in the heat, not designed for contemplation. The range has expanded to include a dark lager (Preta), a stronger amber Bohemia, and a Radler. The non-alcoholic line-up includes Sagres 0.0%, a pale lager, and Sagres 0.0 Preta, a dark lager that was notable as Portugal's first alcohol-free black beer when it launched.
In the UK, Sagres is stocked in some supermarkets and Portuguese delis, and the 0.0% version turns up in specialist AF retailers. It's a familiar face for anyone who has spent time in Portugal, and the alcohol-free version carries the same clean, lightly grainy character as the original. Owned by a global drinks conglomerate, so this is mainstream rather than craft territory, but it does the job well.
