VETO launched in 2020, founded by Justin and Matthias after meeting at a sober business networking event. That origin story is probably the most succinct description of the brand: two people who weren't drinking, who thought the options available to them weren't good enough, and decided to make something better.

The range is deliberately tight. PLAY is an alcohol-free lager that contains caffeine, making it one of the few AF beers positioned as something you might reach for before rather than after activity. PAUSE is the same clean, crisp lager without the caffeine addition. Both are brewed with English spring water and use what the brand calls thoughtful brewing techniques, keeping the ingredient list minimal.

The packaging is part of the pitch. VETO uses half a label on the can — a decision they frame as reducing their carbon footprint. Whether that makes a measurable difference at this scale is debatable, but it gives the brand a visual identity that's genuinely distinctive on a shelf. They also donate a portion of profits to charity.

VETO is a small, relatively new brand with an unusual hook in a market where differentiation is getting harder. The caffeinated lager is the interesting product; PAUSE is the more straightforward option for those who just want a well-made AF beer. Distribution is primarily through online AF specialists.
