Basqueland
Basqueland Brewing was founded in 2015 by two Americans who had no particular business brewing beer in northern Spain and did it anyway. Kevin Patricio and Ben Rozzi had fallen hard for the Basque Country, settled in the region, and set up a brewery in Hernani, Gipuzkoa, with Basque brewmaster Oscar Sáez handling the technical side. The combination of American craft beer culture and a deep-rooted Basque food and drink tradition turned out to be a productive one.
The brewery built a reputation quickly. Named best brewery in Spain multiple times, and crowned EU Champion at a notable European competition, Basqueland has become one of the more internationally recognised Spanish craft breweries — which is not a crowded field, but they would stand out in one that was. The core range includes Imparable IPA and Santa Clara lager alongside a rotating cast of hazys, sours, and high-gravity specials that reflect the American influence without being a straightforward imitation of it.
The Hero range is their alcohol-free line, all at 0.5% ABV. It spans a Hazy IPA with tropical hop character, a West Coast IPA with cleaner, drier bitterness, a stout, and an amber ale. The Hazy and West Coast versions are unfiltered and unpasteurised, which is a commitment you do not see universally in the AF category.
In April 2025, Hijos de Rivera — the Galician drinks group behind Estrella Galicia — took a majority stake in the brewery. Day-to-day operations remain with the founding team, and the brand continues to operate under its own identity. Whether the ownership change affects the character of the beer over time remains to be seen, but the brewing team and the approach that built the reputation are still in place.
Basqueland is distributed in the UK through specialist craft retailers and online channels.
