Abyss Brewing
ABYSS Brewing started in a pub cellar. Specifically, the cellar of The Pelham Arms in Lewes, East Sussex, where in 2016 a small, ambitious brewing operation took shape among the beer lines and old barrels. The surroundings were modest. The beer was not.
Lewes is an unusual place to build a brewery. A small market town perched above the South Downs, it has an independent streak running through its bones — famous for its Bonfire Night celebrations, its own local currency, and a long tradition of doing things differently. ABYSS fitted right in.
By 2020, the brewery had caught wider attention, winning the BREW LDN Accelerator Competition — a significant vote of confidence from the London craft beer scene, which has a long memory and a short tolerance for mediocrity. The following year, ABYSS moved out of the cellar and into a proper home: the old Southdown Brewery Malthouse on Daveys Lane, a building with its own brewing history. The taproom opened alongside, giving drinkers a reason to make the trip to Lewes.
The range spans the modern craft beer playbook: pale ales, IPAs, lagers, sours, stouts. They work on a rotating release schedule, with limited runs alongside a core lineup, and the taproom draws a steady crowd of people who know the difference between a technically correct beer and one with genuine character.
ABYSS stepped into alcohol-free territory with Micro Dose, an IPA brewed to sit among the full-strength cans rather than apologise for its presence. Hop-forward in the way a proper IPA should be, with the bitterness and aroma you want rather than a watered-down approximation of them. At a brewery where the full-strength beers are built around flavour and precision, Micro Dose reflects the same instincts — the AF can is not an afterthought.
For a brewery of its size, ABYSS punches with confidence. The Lewes address gives it some distance from the London craft crowd, which may actually work in its favour: fewer distractions, more focus on what goes in the can.
