Abyss Brewing
Abyss Brewing is an independent East Sussex micro-brewery founded in Lewes in 2016 by Andrew Mellor and Ian Herbert, now based at a dedicated brewery and taproom site.
The brewery began life in the basement kitchen of the Pelham Arms pub in Lewes before moving in 2020 to a permanent home, the ABYSS Brewery and Tap, which houses both the production facility and a public taproom. That origin shapes the brand's identity: a deliberately dark, psychedelic aesthetic drawn from imagery of deep sea and outer space, and a self-description of 'modern beers with a dark side.' Abyss Brewing entered the alcohol-free category in 2023 with a 0.5% gluten-free, vegan-friendly IPA timed to coincide with Dry January. The AF IPA sits at the craft-independent end of the market, brewed for drinkers who want a genuine hop character without compromise.
Distribution is multi-channel: the brand sells direct through its taproom and webshop, alongside availability through specialist alcohol-free retailers. The AF range is deliberately compact, with the 0.5% IPA currently the sole permanent alcohol-free product in the portfolio. Abyss Brewing remains independent, with a strong Lewes identity and a visual language that runs counter to the typically clean, wellness-adjacent aesthetic of many AF brands.
