Vilarnau

The winery's origins date to 1949, when the first bottles bearing the Vilarnau name were produced, though the estate's history traces back to the medieval fortified house of Vila Arnau, from which the brand takes its contracted name. In 1982, Vilarnau became part of the González Byass group, the Jerez-based family wine and spirits company. A purpose-built winery designed by architect Luis González-Haba was inaugurated in October 2005 and serves as the production base today. The building's design, along with the brand's bottle labels, draws visual inspiration from the trencadís mosaic technique associated with Antoni Gaudí: a style of surface decoration using shards of broken tile or ceramic arranged into intricate patterns, which Gaudí used extensively across his Barcelona architecture.

Vilarnau launched its 0.0% alcohol-free sparkling range in 2020, introducing a White and a Rosé produced from organic Macabeo and Parellada grapes. Both are dealcoholised using a spinning cone column, a low-temperature method of separating alcohol from finished wine that protects the wine's aromatic character during the process. Because the Cava Denominación de Origen does not currently permit dealcoholised wines to carry the Cava designation, these variants are classified as sparkling wine beverages rather than Cava, though they are produced at the same estate and from the same grape varieties as the main traditional Cava range.

The 0.0% range sits alongside a broader portfolio of traditional Cavas, including organic and gran reserva styles, making Vilarnau a mixed-range producer with a credible AF sparkling option for sober-curious drinkers who want a premium sparkling wine experience rooted in a genuine Cava estate. Distribution of the 0.0% variants is through specialist online retailers, with the products sitting in the premium price bracket.
