Otter Brewery is a Devon-based beer brand founded in 1990 by David and Mary Ann McCaig, operating from a 16th-century farm in Luppitt, near Honiton, with an AF IPA in its range alongside a long-established core of traditional ales.

The brewery takes its name from the River Otter, which runs below the valley. Brewing water is drawn directly from the river's head springs, making the connection between name and source unusually literal. Annual output across the full range sits at approximately 20,000 UK barrels, which places Otter firmly in the mid-tier of British regional brewers.

The core alcoholic range spans traditional real ales at a range of strengths, from Otter Bitter at 3.6% to the stronger Otter Head at 5.8%, alongside lagers trading under the Tarka name, a cider, and a gin.

Otter Zero is the brewery's AF beer: an IPA brewed to under 0.5% ABV. The recipe blends English and US hops to produce stone fruit and citrus alongside a clean bitter finish. It is available through specialist alcohol-free retailers.

Otter has made practical sustainability investments at its Luppitt site. The cellar is built underground to reduce refrigeration demand, and a reed-bed system treats and recycles wastewater on site. These are infrastructure decisions embedded in the brewery's physical layout, not statements of intent.

For weeknight drinkers seeking an AF IPA from a brewery with decades of on-trade presence in Devon and the wider south-west, Otter's combination of place, process, and traditional brewing history gives the Zero a context that standalone AF brands cannot replicate.
