Dirwest
The name alone sets the tone. Dirwest is the Welsh word for temperance, and founder Nia Môn chose it deliberately, tracing a line back to the chapel-going women of Wales who built a teetotal tradition that outlasted them by generations. In Dwyfor, the old Welsh county in what is now Gwynedd, dry Sundays were still enforced by law until 1996. Dirwest does not revive that austerity; it reframes it. The brand is based in the Vale of Glamorgan and leans into Welsh culture and language not as decoration but as the whole point.
Môn launched the brand with support from a Vale of Glamorgan Council bursary through Shared Prosperity Funding, which covered the early groundwork: trademarks, design, product development. That modest start produced a range that is entirely made in Wales and carries a genuine sustainability commitment. Bottles for the botanical spirit are made from recycled flint glass with hand-applied organic ink labels. Beers come in fully recyclable aluminium cans. All outer packaging uses recyclable cardboard. The brand is direct about wanting to avoid greenwashing, which is a notable thing to say and, from the evidence, not just a claim.
The product range is small but considered. The botanical spirit is gin-style, built around juniper with orange and black pepper, and works well with tonic and fresh citrus. The beers carry Welsh-language names with cultural weight: Yma o Hyd (meaning "still here", after the defiant Dafydd Iwan song) is an AF IPA brewed and canned in Wales, delivering soft bitterness and tropical fruit notes. Cofiwch Dryweryn and I'r Gad round out the range with a craft lager and a summer citrus lager. Every product in the range is gluten-free and vegan.
Dirwest is currently sold primarily through its own website with some independent stockists nearby. It is a small brand with a clear identity and an unusually specific cultural rationale behind it. Worth knowing about if Welsh provenance and language matter to you, or if you simply want well-made AF drinks from a producer with something genuine to say.
