Neumarkter Lammsbräu

The Ehrnsperger family has owned the brewery since 1800. Under Dr. Franz Ehrnsperger, the entire range converted to 100% organic production in 1992, a transition that earned Neumarkter Lammsbräu recognition as the world's first organic brewery. The brewery operates its own organic malting plant and sources water from its own certified organic mineral spring, giving it an unusual degree of raw material control from grain to glass.

The alcohol-free range goes back to 1986, when the brewery launched its first organic alcohol-free beer at a time when the category barely existed as a commercial proposition. The production approach for the alcohol-free beers uses arrested fermentation, a method in which the brewing process is stopped early before significant alcohol can develop, rather than removing alcohol from a fully fermented beer after the fact. This is documented as a deliberate choice: the alcohol-free beers are brewed from the start to remain low in alcohol rather than being dealcoholised afterwards.

The non-alcoholic range spans organic beers and mixed beer drinks, including elderberry blossom-infused variants, giving the range an unusual breadth within the AF beer category. The range is well suited to fitness-focused drinkers who want organic credentials alongside the low-ABV format.

Neumarkter Lammsbräu's long history with organic certification and in-house malting gives it a provenance story rare in the modern AF beer market, where most producers work with standard malt supply chains. The combination of a 1628-founded history, family continuity since 1800, and a 1986 alcohol-free launch places it well outside the mainstream of recently founded AF-first brands. Products are distributed internationally through organic food stores, health food retailers, and well-stocked mainstream outlets with organic sections.
