The AF beer was developed alongside Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, North Yorkshire. It is brewed using an arrested fermentation process, in which fermentation is stopped before significant alcohol develops, as opposed to the more common approach of brewing at full strength and then removing the alcohol afterwards. This method preserves the hop-forward character of the base IPA throughout the process. The band's skeletal mascot, Vic Rattlehead, is central to the visual identity of the range. Dave Mustaine, Megadeth's founding member, was the driving force behind the brand's entry into the alcohol-free category: he has spoken publicly about his health-conscious approach to living and his commitment to ensuring that fans who do not drink alcohol could access a Megadeth-branded product.

The brand's identity draws on heavy metal culture and occupies a deliberately louder, less corporate position in a category that has grown considerably in recent years. Distribution is through specialist alcohol-free and craft beer retailers rather than mainstream supermarket channels.
