Brauerei Göller
Brauerei Göller is a craft brewery in Zeil am Main, Franconia, Germany, with a history stretching back to 1514 when a local sanctuary called the "Alte Freyung" (Old Sanctuary) was granted brewing and serving rights. The brewery produces alcohol-free beers alongside a range of typical Franconian styles, including Pilsners, Keller beers, and seasonal bock beers. Josef and Margaret Göller acquired the brewery in 1908, and it has remained in family hands since. Today it is run by Franz-Josef Göller and his wife Eva, representing the third generation of the family, with Felix Göller serving as brewmaster.
Göller brews using triple decoction mashing, a multi-step process in which the mash is heated in stages to extract flavour from the grain, and retains natural carbonation from primary fermentation throughout the range. Barley and wheat come from farms in the direct vicinity of Zeil am Main, hops from growers within Bavaria, and the grain is malted in nearby Bamberg or Schweinfurt. Annual output runs to 50,000 hectolitres of beer and a further 10,000 hectolitres of alcohol-free beer. The brewery sells 90 per cent of its output within a 50-kilometre radius, and its beers are imported exclusively into the USA by Ancient Craft Imports. Two of the brewery's alcohol-free drinks have won awards.
Göller holds several environmental commitments: the brewhouse uses an energy-saving gentle boiling system, the site draws on photovoltaic and solar thermal energy for heating, and a carbonation recovery system retains CO2 gas generated during fermentation. The brewery is the only one in Lower Franconia to carry the "Quality Association of Environmentally Conscious Companies" certification.
