Schlappeseppel
Schlappeseppel is a German lager brand based in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, with a history tracing back to 1631 and an alcohol-free range launched in 2015.
The brand takes its name from a foot soldier, Joseph Lögler, who brewed beer for Swedish King Gustav's troops after they took Aschaffenburg and found the city's barrels empty during the Thirty Years' War. Schlappeseppel is a regional idiom drawn from Lögler's nickname, "der lahme Seppel", which referred to his limp. Today, the brand is brewed by Eder & Heylands Brauerei, a traditional, independent family business in the Aschaffenburg region, and it is Eder & Heylands' most profitable brand. The brewery has produced Schlappeseppel since 1999.
Schlappeseppel brews lagers and Kellerbier (an unfiltered lager style) alongside its alcohol-free pilsner. The alcohol is removed using modern, gentle methods, and the recipe draws on two hop varieties: Aromahopfen 'Perle' and Bitterhopfen 'Magnum'. One of the brand's drinks has picked up an award. The range is well suited to drivers and those seeking an alcohol-free option during sport or the working day.
