Birra Moretti
Birra Moretti is an Italian lager brand with roots in Udine, in the Friuli region of northern Italy, established in 1859 by Luigi Moretti, predating the formation of the modern Italian state. Moretti chose to open his own brewery rather than continue importing beer from Austria, naming it the Beer and Ice Factory and projecting initial output of 250,000 litres a year. One of Italy's oldest operating breweries, the brand now includes an alcohol-free lager in its range.
The brewery produces a pale lager brewed with malted barley, maize, and hops, maintaining the same recipe since 1859. During the 1980s, Birra Moretti expanded across northern Italy and grew to become the third largest brewery in Italy by the late 1980s, with national distribution in Italy following in the 1990s.
The Moretti family owned the brewery for 130 years before a 70% stake was sold to Labatt Brewing Company in 1989. Heineken International acquired the brand in 1996 and has brewed it since. Today Birra Moretti is also brewed in Manchester, England. The lager is exported to over 40 countries worldwide, was introduced to international markets in 2001, and is the best-selling draft lager in the United Kingdom.
Since the 1950s, every label has featured a moustachioed man. In 2015 the brand launched six new products, expanding a range that now includes ales, radlers, and locally inspired lager variants.
