Bitburger
Bitburger is a family-owned German pilsner brewery founded in Bitburg, in the Eifel mountains of Rhineland-Palatinate, by Johann Peter Wallenborn in 1817. The brewery began as a small country operation producing top-fermented beer; in 1883, Theobald Simon brewed the first pilsner there using bottom-fermentation, a process in which yeast settles at the base of the vessel, followed by cold conditioning and extended ageing at low temperatures. Bitburger won a three-year legal battle in 1913 to secure the right to use the term "Pilsner", and has brewed under the German Beer Purity Law throughout.
Exports began in 1886, with beer transported by horse and cart to Echternach in Luxembourg. Distribution expanded to the United States in 1978, and by 1990 the brewery was exporting to more than 30 countries. Annual production exceeded 2.38 million hectolitres in 1987. Bitburger celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2017 and remains in private family ownership, now more than seven generations on from the Wallenborn founding. It is the most frequently tapped beer in German pubs.
Bitburger introduced an alcohol-free beer in 2004. The alcohol-free pilsner is brewed at full strength, undergoing complete fermentation following the same process as the main pilsner, with the alcohol then removed. It uses water, barley malt, Hallertau hops, and hop extract, and is produced under the German Beer Purity Law. The range is a natural fit for designated drivers, and the beers are available through multiple retail channels with a broad international footprint.
