Black Isle
Black Isle Brewery is Scotland's first and only organic brewers, founded in 1998 by David Gladwin on the Black Isle Peninsula in the Scottish Highlands, producing alcohol-free beers as part of its range.
David Gladwin launched the brewery with a vision to build a business that prioritises the wellbeing of the natural world without compromising on quality, a philosophy summed up in the brewery's motto "Save the Planet, drink organic." Based in Munlochy, Ross and Cromarty, north of Inverness where the Firth of Moray meets the sea, Black Isle owns 130 acres of farmland on which it grows the vast majority of the barley used in brewing. Organic hops and organic barley go into every batch, and the brewery uses 100% natural ingredients throughout. Black Isle moved to a more modern facility in 2011 and brings 25 years of brewing experience to its operation.
The brewery is a pioneer of regenerative farming. Spent grain from each brew is fed to the brewery's flock of Hebridean sheep, whose wool provides material for staff clothing. Head brewer Richard Mellen leads a programme spanning IPAs, lagers, stouts and porters, all brewed on the farm site. Black Isle also runs craft beer and pizza bars in Inverness and Fort William.
The alcohol-free range is produced using reverse osmosis, meaning the alcohol is removed from fully brewed beer by passing it under pressure through a membrane. Spiral membrane filtration is also part of the process. The range covers organic IPAs and lagers.
Black Isle sells across multiple retail channels and direct from its own bars and website.
