Black Tower
Black Tower is a German wine brand with a winemaking heritage dating back to 1920, ranked as Germany's most widely exported branded wine, with an alcohol-free range of whites and rosés produced alongside its core lines.
Founded as a distinct brand in 1973, Black Tower is owned by Reh Kendermann, the German wine company that acquired it in 1992 and for which it is the flagship brand. The brand's early range centred on a Liebfraumilch blend, which it stopped producing in 1989; its classic lines now include Rivaner, Pinot Grigio, and Dornfelder/Pinot Noir. Annual global sales stand at more than 14 million bottles, and the wines are available in more than 50 countries worldwide. Black Tower is the biggest German wine brand in the UK and targets growth in China, the United States, and Brazil.
In 1995, the brand was sponsored by the Williams-Renault Formula 1 team. In 2016, Black Tower launched a flavoured drinks segment and an organic range. A relaunch in 2020 introduced a redesigned bottle with a clear lower half and black upper half. The brand has developed a series of Special Releases alongside its core lines, and its wines are sold in various formats including pouches, bag-in-boxes, and Tetrapaks. Its marketing targets young professionals.
Black Tower has been producing low- and alcohol-free wines for a number of years. The alcohol-free range covers whites and rosés: the white wine is aromatised, meaning it is made with added botanicals, and de-alcoholised, meaning the alcohol has been removed after fermentation. These products are aimed at health-conscious consumers and designated drivers.
