Brass Castle
Brass Castle is an independent brewery based in Malton, North Yorkshire, established in 2014, with an alcohol-free range alongside its wider beer programme.
The idea originated in a Manhattan apartment and on the brewhouse floor of Triumph Brewing in Princeton, during the US craft beer revolution. Founded by a group of friends, the brewery opened in Malton in 2014, in the town known locally as Yorkshire's Food Capital. Brass Castle developed its own house yeast from a traditional English ale strain, together with specialised brewing processes. The brewery invested in a canning line and carbonation tanks in 2018 and expanded its capacity from a 12 to 25-barrel plant in 2023. Alongside ales and lagers, it has turned its attention to unconventional ingredients and has more recently begun developing kombucha recipes. Brass Castle also became a regular importer of American cask beers through its work with NERAX in the USA.
Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory to confirm it meets the less than 20ppm gluten standard. A naturally derived enzyme used during fermentation breaks down and removes gluten from the beer, and all gluten-free beers are brewed in North Yorkshire.
Sustainability runs through the brewery's operations. Spent grain and hops go to an anaerobic digester to produce biogas and fertilisers, spent hops are also sent to local allotments to enrich the soil, and Brass Castle prioritises reusable steel kegs while recycling one-way Keykegs. The alcohol-free range gives sober-curious drinkers access to a brewer with this depth of process and sustainability commitment. An adjacent brewery tap serves visitors directly from the Malton site.
