Brugse Zot
Brugse Zot is a Belgian Pale Ale brewed by Brouwerij De Halve Maan in Bruges, first launched on 29 June 2005 as a city beer for Bruges. De Halve Maan is a family-run brewery with a history stretching back to 1856, and the launch of Brugse Zot marked the return of brewing to the Bruges city centre. The brand was created by Xavier Vanneste, and its name comes from a legend involving Emperor Maximilian of Austria and the people of Bruges. The beers are made with four different kinds of malt and two aromatic hop varieties, including locally sourced hops from a Westhoek farm. A darker, stronger style was added to the range in 2006.
In June 2018, Brouwerij De Halve Maan became the first Belgian brewery to release an alcohol-free speciality beer under the Brugse Zot name. The alcohol is removed through a natural filtration process. Brugse Zot is sold in more than 40 countries, and the alcohol-free option appeals to sober-curious drinkers seeking a Belgian speciality style.
