Buckler
Buckler is an alcohol-free pale lager brewed by Heineken in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands, first launched in the summer of 1988 with an ABV of 0.5%.
Produced through a dealcoholisation process, meaning the alcohol is removed after a conventional brewing cycle, the lager uses water, barley malt, and hops. Buckler was introduced by Heineken, a company founded in Amsterdam in 1864 by Gerard Adriaan Heineken, and gained traction in the Netherlands and in export markets in the years following its launch. Buckler is aimed at sober-curious consumers.
The brand's image in its home market declined in 1989, when Dutch comedian Youp van 't Hek mocked Buckler in a stage show, and it never fully recovered. A 2004 recall, following a fault in the pasteurising process, added to those difficulties, and Buckler is no longer available in the Netherlands.
Internationally, US Vice President Joe Biden chose Buckler at the Beer Summit, and on 8 June 2007 former US President George W. Bush drank Buckler during a break in the G8 summit alongside Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Buckler is produced by Heineken Nederland B.V.
