Budvar

Uniquely among major European brewing names, Budvar remains a state-owned enterprise, held by the Czech Republic through its Ministry of Agriculture rather than any private or multinational shareholder. The brewery holds a Protected Geographical Indication from the European Union for 'Budějovické pivo', anchoring its identity firmly to its Bohemian home city.

Budvar's ingredient story is specific: whole-cone Saaz hops, Moravian malts, and water drawn from 300-metre deep Ice Age aquifers beneath the brewery site. Its standard lagers undergo a 90-day lagering period, considerably longer than most commercial equivalents. The primary AF lager is brewed with the same Moravian barley and Saaz hops as the flagship, using a fermentation process adjusted to limit the conversion of sugars into alcohol, keeping the product at 0.0% from the outset rather than removing alcohol from a finished beer. The shared ingredient base connects the AF range to the same flavour foundations as the full-strength flagship. The AF portfolio also includes a citrus-infused lager variant.

Budvar has maintained a century-long trademark dispute with the American brewer Anheuser-Busch over the Budweiser name, which began in 1907 and is one of the longest-running commercial trademark cases in history. Budvar's consistent positioning as an independent national institution, separate from global corporate brewing consolidation, is reinforced by both its state-ownership structure and its defence of its Bohemian claim to the Budweiser name.

The AF range is available through mainstream supermarkets and specialist alcohol-free retailers, giving Budvar a broad multi-channel presence in the AF lager category for weeknight drinkers who want a recognisable Central European lager heritage in an alcohol-free format.
