Budvar
Budweiser Budvar is a Czech lager brewery founded in 1895 in České Budějovice, the Bohemian city also known by its German name Budweis, where beer has been brewed since the 13th century. The brewery was established as Český akciový pivovar by Czech-speaking citizens via an early form of crowd-funding, adopted the Budvar name in 1936, and has been owned by the Czech state since 1948. It remains wholly owned by the Czech government.
Budvar's beers are brewed exclusively in České Budějovice using artesian water drawn from an Ice Age aquifer 300 metres beneath the brewery, malting barley from the Hana region of Moravia, and whole-cone Saaz hops from Žatec, a variety recognised as a noble hop. The brewery uses separate vessels for fermentation and lagering, and cold-conditions its lagers for a minimum of 90 days. Its pale lager has been called "The Beer of Kings" since the 16th century.
Budvar is the second largest exporter of Czech beer abroad and the fourth largest beer producer in the Czech Republic. Outside Europe, where it holds legal rights to the Budweiser name through a trademark dispute with AB InBev dating to the early twentieth century, the beer is sold as Czechvar in North America, Brazil, Mexico, Panama, Peru and the Philippines. The brewery maintains sales and marketing subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Croatia, and operates its own retail stores in the Czech Republic. A logistical centre opened in 2018, and the brewery has announced plans to expand annual production to around 2 million hectoliters.
Budvar's alcohol-free lagers, introduced in 2015, sit alongside the core range.
