Bullhouse
Bullhouse is a Belfast-based craft brewery launched commercially in March 2016 by Willy Mayne, growing from a converted cattle shed into one of Northern Ireland's leading independent breweries.
Mayne had spent four years homebrewing before going commercial, returning to Northern Ireland after a US road trip that included a visit to Green Flash Brewery in San Diego. That visit reshaped his thinking about what a brewery could be as both a production facility and a community space. He brewed evenings and weekends for eighteen months alongside a full-time job, then named a beer after the P45 redundancy form when he finally resigned in 2017.
The brewery began in a 500-square-foot converted cattle shed on Mayne's family farm near Belfast. A 2020 Bounce Back Loan funded a move to a 6,000-square-foot facility in south Belfast, and the team has since grown to 26 people. Bullhouse East, a permanent taproom on Newtownards Road in east Belfast, opened in June 2022 with 20 taps and a woodfired pizza kitchen. The brewery now distributes across Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland, and mainland Europe including France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
Bullhouse's core output is full-strength hop-forward beer, with pale ales, IPAs, and DIPAs forming the backbone of the range. The alcohol-free addition to the lineup is a 0.5% pale ale brewed to carry stone-fruit hop character, vegan and gluten-free in a 440ml can. It is available through specialist alcohol-free retailers, extending the brewery's reach among sober-curious drinkers beyond its mainstream and independent craft distribution footprint.
