Captain Morgan
Captain Morgan is a spiced rum brand with Caribbean origins, founded in Jamaica in 1944 by the Seagram Company and taking its name from Sir Henry Morgan, the 17th-century Welsh privateer. The brand was initially produced at Long Pond distillery in Jamaica before manufacturing shifted to Puerto Rico at some point in the 1950s; it is now produced in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Outside Jamaica, Diageo, the British alcohol conglomerate, handles production; in Jamaica, the brand is made by J. Wray & Nephew Ltd.
Captain Morgan was introduced to the United States in 1984 and acquired by Diageo in 2001. Positioned as a premium Caribbean rum brand, it now sells over 11 million cases annually across more than 100 countries, making it the third best-selling rum in the world. Distribution spans the United States, Canada, Great Britain, South Africa, and global travel retail.
Spiced and flavoured rums form the basis of the brand's range. The original recipe was developed for medicinal purposes, and spiced rum has remained Captain Morgan's core category since its founding. The brand's recognisable look was designed by artist Don Maitz, and Captain Morgan has also funded archaeological excavation connected to Sir Henry Morgan's ships.
In 2023, Captain Morgan launched a 0.0% ABV alcohol-free spirit to extend its spiced rum range for sober-curious drinkers and those who avoid alcohol. The alcohol-free variant carries flavour notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla and warm spices. In 2024, a premixed alcohol-free cocktail extended the range further. One of its alcohol-free drinks has won awards.
