Deschutes Brewery

Gary Fish established the brewery as a small brew pub, selling 310 barrels of beer in its first year. It expanded to a 16,000-square-foot production facility in 1993 and was producing 250,000 US barrels annually by 2012, ranking as the eighth-largest craft brewery in the United States as of 2016. The brewery distributes beer to 28 states and the District of Columbia, as well as internationally. Its flagship porter is the best-selling craft porter in the United States.

Majority owned by Gary Fish and his family, Deschutes is a private company that purchases or offsets 100 percent of its electrical power from renewable sources. Through the Deschutes River Conservancy's water leasing programme, the brewery pledged from 2012 to return one billion gallons of water annually to the Deschutes River.

Development of alcohol-free beers began over five years before the 2024 launch, with the range made a primary strategic focus for 2025. The AF beers are produced in partnership with Sustainable Beverage Technologies using reverse osmosis, a process in which alcohol is separated from the fully fermented beer through a semi-permeable membrane. The brewery has also collaborated with Patagonia Provisions on an alcohol-free Kernza brew. Two of its alcohol-free beers have won awards.

Over 94% of those who drink Deschutes AF beers also drink regular full-strength beer.
