Desperados
Desperados is a pale lager flavoured with agave spirit, first launched in France in 1995 by Brasserie Fischer in Schiltigheim, Alsace, and now distributed by Heineken in 84 countries. The brand has since added an alcohol-free range.
The Fischer brewery was established in Strasbourg in 1821, and when Desperados launched it became the first beer in France to be flavoured with an agave-based spirit. The lager is brewed from malted barley, maize, and hop extract, then infused with agave spirit after fermentation to produce its characteristic tequila-like flavour. The agave spirit used comes from Mexico. The finished beer is pasteurised. Heineken subsequently took over the brand, and production has expanded to several facilities across multiple countries.
Desperados targets young adults aged 18 to 35 and positions itself around nightlife and party occasions. The alcohol-free range carries the agave spirit and lemon character of the main range into 0% variants. An alcohol-free variant has been brewed at the Zoeterwolde facility in the Netherlands since 2021. The drinks are available through mainstream retail and specialist channels in the mid-range price bracket.
