Farm Yard Brew Co
Farm Yard Brew Co is a micro brewery founded in 2016 by Steve Holmes, a sixth-generation farmer who turned to brewing at Moss Edge Farm in Cockerham, Lancashire, as a way to diversify from traditional farming and keep the family farm alive.
Holmes launched the business without a background in the trade, drawing on support from his parents, friends, the Rural Development Programme and NatWest to get it started. The brewery originally traded as Farm Yard Ales and rebranded under its current name in 2022.
Its beers are brewed using water, barley, wheat, hops and yeast, and the range spans styles from IPAs to stouts. An on-site taproom within the brewery runs 12 keg lines, 3 cask lines and a fridge stocked with cans, giving visitors direct access to the output. Alongside its beers, the taproom carries a selection of local gins, wines and spirits, with alcohol-free options among them.
Sustainability is built into the operation. A solar panel installation supplies 50% of the brewery's annual energy needs, and spent grain from the brewing process is reused rather than discarded.
Farm Yard Brew Co is a Holmes family business, set in the Lancashire countryside near Lancaster, on the sixth-generation farm that prompted its creation.
