Gordon's
Gordon's is a London dry gin brand founded by Alexander Gordon in Southwark, London, in 1769, and today the world's largest gin brand.
Alexander Gordon established his distillery in Southwark, where the water supply suited production, before relocating to Clerkenwell in 1786. The current distillery sits in Fife, Scotland. Gordon's is owned by Diageo. In 1898, Charles Tanqueray & Co. amalgamated with Gordon & Co. to form Tanqueray Gordon & Co.
The gin is triple-distilled from four botanicals: juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root, and liquorice. Gordon's tests over 3,000 botanicals each year and rejects nine out of ten during ingredient selection. The recipe has been closely guarded since 1769; only eleven people know it in full. In 1906, the brand introduced the sloe gin category, and in 1924 it launched the first cocktail shaker bottle. By the 1960s, Gordon's was the world's best-selling gin brand. The brand holds four Royal Warrants.
Alcohol-free alternatives arrived in 2020 with a version that mirrors the same four botanicals used in the London Dry recipe. The 0.0% range is produced via a distillation process in which each botanical is individually immersed in water, heated, distilled, and then blended. In 2022, a 0% pink version was added, drawing on raspberries and strawberries with notes of redcurrant and juniper. Two of the brand's alcohol-free drinks have won awards. The range is available across multiple retail channels.
