Grand Sud
Grand Sud is a wine brand from the south of France, produced by Les Grands Chais de France, one of the country's largest wine groups. The range draws on grapes grown in the Pays d'Oc and Gascony regions, where the Mediterranean climate and the Mistral wind produce ripe, fruit-forward varieties that travel well and sell cheaply. That combination has made Grand Sud one of the more widely recognised French wine brands worldwide, found in supermarkets and off-licences across more than a hundred countries.
The core range is built around familiar varietals: Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, typically sold in one-litre bottles or bag-in-box formats. The brand sits at the budget end of the market, and that has always been the point. These are everyday wines with no pretension to complexity.
Grand Sud has extended this formula into dealcoholised wine, offering alcohol-free versions of its Chardonnay and Merlot. The process uses vacuum distillation via a spinning cones column, which removes alcohol at low temperatures and is intended to preserve the wine's fruit character. The results are in keeping with the standard range: approachable, uncomplicated, and unambiguously priced for the mainstream market.
In the UK, both the AF Chardonnay and AF Merlot are available through supermarkets and online retailers, typically in one-litre bottles. For shoppers who want a no-fuss, recognisably wine-shaped drink at a low price point, Grand Sud sits comfortably in that space. It is not trying to compete with the more craft-oriented end of the dealcoholised wine category.
