Kingfisher
Kingfisher is an Indian pilsner-style lager with origins dating to 1857, when five of India's most prominent breweries joined forces to create the recipe. The brand was relaunched in 1978 by Vijay Mallya and is produced by United Breweries Group in Bangalore, using malted barley, Saaz hops, and pure water sourced from the Western Ghats. Originally developed as a flavourful pilsner inspired by classic European brewing but lighter on the palate to refresh drinkers in the humid subcontinent, it has become India's best-selling premium lager and is among the top 20 most-sold beer brands worldwide.
Every batch passes through over 200 quality checks during brewing, and Kingfisher has maintained the same recipe since the 1978 relaunch. The brand was among the first in India to introduce a variety of beer styles, and expanded into international markets during the 1980s. It is now sold in the United Kingdom and other European countries. In the UK, Kingfisher is brewed under licence by Heineken to the same recipe used in India; Kingfisher Beer Europe was founded in 1989 for this purpose, operating from a head office in Maidstone, Kent, and became Kingfisher Drinks in 2023. The brand underwent a refresh in 2022.
Alongside its core lager range, Kingfisher produces an alcohol-free lager at 0.0% ABV, made from natural ingredients with the alcohol removed prior to bottling, extending the brand's reach to those seeking an alcohol-free option.
