Mad Flora
Mad Flora is a Brooklyn-based, chef-owned brand producing spirit-free amaros, alcohol-free alternatives to the Italian herbal liqueur category, founded by Lauren McGurrin. The brand came into being after McGurrin stepped away from alcohol to prioritise her mental health, aiming to recreate the complex herbal notes she had come to miss. The project launched via a Kickstarter campaign.
Amaro is a style of herbal liqueur built on bitter botanicals, roots, and citrus, widely associated with Italian digestif culture and used extensively in cocktail-making. Mad Flora's recipe draws on a botanicals-forward set of ingredients that in early development included gentian, a bitter root common to traditional amaros, alongside thyme, blood orange, angelica, and umami-rich components. McGurrin is a chef, and the brand describes itself as Brooklyn-inspired.
One of its drinks has picked up awards. Mad Flora reaches drinkers through specialist alcohol-free retailers.
