Ginger wine is one of the great British traditions that somehow never quite made it into the alcohol-free conversation. Rochester has been making the case for it since long before the current wave of AF drinks arrived.

The brand traces its recipe to Victorian England, drawing on the era when ginger drinks were a staple of the British household. The recipe is often described as Dickensian, which is a fair characterisation: warming, botanical, made with real ginger root alongside elderflower, primrose and raisins. It reads like something you would find in a Victorian apothecary, and there is genuine craft behind that. The Original Drinks Company, the business behind the brand, has maintained this as a core identity rather than a marketing angle.

There are two main variants. Rochester Ginger is the original: a deep, amber-coloured drink with a clean, sharp heat from real ginger and a slightly sweet, floral finish. It is the kind of thing that makes complete sense served warm with a slice of orange in December, or over ice in a tall glass when you want something with character. The Dark Ginger takes a deeper turn, with raisin and elderflower giving it a richer, almost wine-like body. The resemblance to a traditional ginger wine is intentional. Both come in the distinctive 725ml bottle that has been associated with the brand for years.

Neither product is trying to mimic something alcoholic. This is its own category, with its own identity. It works well as a standalone drink, as a mixer, and as a genuinely festive option for anyone at a Christmas table who wants something more interesting than sparkling water. Bartenders and home hosts have both taken to it for that reason.

The brand sits at mid-range pricing and is available widely in the UK. Holland and Barrett carries it regularly, as do a number of independent health food retailers and specialist online shops. It has also found an audience well beyond the UK, with distribution across Europe and stockists in Australia. That reach is unusual for a product this niche, and reflects how well the original recipe has travelled.

For a non-alcoholic drink category that often feels dominated by beer and spirits alternatives, Rochester is a reminder that ginger wine has been doing this quietly for a very long time.
