Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt

Back to brands

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt is a German Riesling producer with a documented history dating to 1349, now offering alcohol-free wines from its Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer vineyards. Based at Schloss Marienlay in the Ruwer Valley, the estate spans 46 to 50 hectares of family-owned vineyards across three river valleys, including the Josephshöfer vineyard in Graach, of which it is the sole owner.

The estate's origins trace to a vineyard purchase recorded in 1349, when the von Kesselstatt family, a family from old Hesse nobility, established a presence in Trier. Over centuries the family became one of the larger landholders on the Mosel, and the Kesselstatts were elevated to Reichsgrafen (Imperial Counts) in 1776. The current vineyard portfolio was largely assembled between 1854 and 1889, when four former Maximiner monastery estates were acquired. In 1978, Günther Reh purchased the estate; his daughter Annegret Reh-Gartner then directed operations from 1983 to 2016. Management passed to Dr. Karsten Weyand in July 2020, who leads the estate alongside cellarmaster David Nicolay.

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt holds VDP.Grosse Lage parcels (the association's premier vineyard classification) across 11 to 15 classified sites and has been a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter since 2005. Viticulture across the steep-slope vineyards relies on hand harvesting, cover crops, and careful canopy management. Winemaking uses spontaneous fermentation with no addition of commercial yeasts; still wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel, while the grand cru range uses traditional wooden barrels.

The alcohol-free wines extend this Mosel Riesling tradition, with both still and sparkling styles available. From January 2025, a national distribution partnership with Mack and Schühle has broadened the estate's reach across Germany.
