Stewart Brewing
Stewart Brewing is a Scottish independent brewery founded in Edinburgh in 2004 by Steve and Jo Stewart, with alcohol-free beers produced alongside its wider portfolio.
The idea for the brewery was sparked in 1996 by a visit to Boston, Massachusetts. Steve Stewart had started home brewing at the age of 16 and went on to work at Bass and Harpoon Brewery before setting up his own venture. The first brew kit was assembled in the Stewarts' dining room in 1998, then moved to a coal shed, before premises in Edinburgh were secured in 2002. The first range of cask beers launched in 2004, when six local pubs agreed to stock them and Stewart Brewing became Edinburgh's only independent brewery.
The brewery is now based in Loanhead, Midlothian, where it opened its first custom-built brewery in 2013, just around the corner from the original Edinburgh site. A team of around 50 operates the business. In 2020 the brewery added its first canning line, built a new warehouse, and began Brewery Shop refurbishment plans. A tasting room also operates in Leith.
In the brewhouse, Stewart Brewing uses Hop Rockets to infuse hops directly into its beers and employs a centrifuge to remove solids without filtration, producing in small batches. The brewery is independently owned by Steve Stewart, is considered Edinburgh's original craft brewery, and has joined the Midlothian Business Green Pledge.
The alcohol-free range, spanning lagers and pale ales, suits sober-curious drinkers. Stewart Brewing is one of the UK's leading independent breweries.
