Tempest Brewing
Tempest Brewing Co. is a Scottish craft brewery founded in 2010 by Gavin and Annika Meiklejohn, based in Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders and producing a dedicated alcohol-free range of beers alongside its full-strength lineup.
The Meiklejohns began brewing in a garage in Christchurch, New Zealand, before relocating to Scotland to establish the brewery properly. Their background in the food industry shapes the flavour-led philosophy that runs through the entire range: Tempest treats flavour as the starting point rather than the outcome of the production process, a distinction that carries across both alcoholic and alcohol-free output.
Tempest entered the AF market in 2019 with its first alcohol-free beer, an early move for an independent Scottish craft brewery, and positioned it as a craft option for drinkers who want genuine complexity rather than a stripped-back substitute. The AF lineup has since grown to span IPAs, sours, and shandies, a breadth of styles unusual for an independent regional producer. One product in the range is an AF version of one of the brewery's cult full-strength beers, bringing the same lime and salt sour character into the 0.0% format.
Tempest operates as a genuinely independent brewery, describing itself as fresh, local, and independent. All three qualities carry through to the AF range. Distribution covers the brand's own webshop and specialist alcohol-free retailers, making the range accessible beyond the Scottish Borders without relying on mainstream supermarket listings. For sober-curious drinkers who want craft-beer depth and genuine variety in the AF space, Tempest's range represents one of the more considered programmes from a UK regional independent.
