Tempest Brewing Co started in a garage in Christchurch, New Zealand, where founder Gavin Meiklejohn began homebrewing with locally sourced hops while working as a chef. He and his partner Annika had met while travelling and eventually settled in New Zealand long enough to get serious about beer. Not long after, they packed up and headed to Scotland, where the craft brewing scene was gathering pace. In early 2010, they set up a ten-barrel brewery in a disused dairy in Kelso, in the Scottish Borders.

The original site quickly proved too small. By late 2014 they had moved to a larger purpose-built brewery in Tweedbank, drawn partly by the exceptionally soft water in the Borders. From there the brand grew into one of Scotland's most respected independent craft breweries, noted for a wide range that spans everything from crushable lagers to barrel-aged heavyweights. Gavin's culinary background shows in the approach: ingredients matter, balance matters, and the range reflects genuine curiosity rather than trend-chasing.

Alongside the core alcoholic range, Tempest has built up a small but considered selection of alcohol-free beers, all sitting at 0.5% ABV. Sleight of Hand is a sour pale with a citrus-forward character; Lagerita takes the bright, zesty template of a margarita and renders it in lager form; Face Hopper is an AF IPA with the hop presence you'd expect from that style. Ghost Rider and Shandgri-la round out the lineup, though availability of individual cans fluctuates. The approach to AF is consistent with how the brewery handles everything else: these are beers that happen to be alcohol-free, not separate products engineered to fill a commercial gap.

In November 2024 Tempest opened a taproom in Galashiels, a proper venue with 16 lines covering brewery-fresh beer, AF options, cider, wine, and Scottish whiskies. AF products are available through the brewery's online shop and stocked by specialist AF retailers. For a craft brewery that built its name on complex, ambitious beer, the alcohol-free range is a natural extension rather than an afterthought.
