Zonin
One of Italy's largest family-owned wine producers, Zonin has been making wine in the Veneto since 1821. Seven generations of the same family have grown it from a small estate in Gambellara into a group spanning nine wineries across seven Italian wine regions, with nearly 5,000 acres of vineyard under cultivation. The name was formalised as Zonin1821 to mark that founding date.
The core business is still very much wine in the traditional sense: Prosecco, Pinot Grigio, Amarone, and a full sweep of Italian classics. The alcohol-free range sits alongside all of that as a relatively recent addition, responding to growing demand in the UK market rather than any reinvention of the brand.
The alcohol-free product is the Cuvée Zero, a sparkling wine-style drink made from Glera grapes (the same variety used in Prosecco) alongside Garganega, Trebbiano, and Chardonnay. Alcohol is removed using a spinning cone column, a gentle dealcoholisation technique that aims to preserve as much flavour as possible. The result comes in under 0.5% ABV. In the glass it shows pale yellow with persistent bubbles; the palate runs to apple and pear with a notably rounded, fuller body than you might expect. The sweetness is more pronounced than in standard Prosecco, which is fairly typical of dealcoholised sparkling wines. It retails around £7.50, putting it at the accessible end of the AF sparkling category.
Available through Ocado and online retailers. Not a specialist AF brand by any stretch, but the Cuvée Zero draws on genuine winemaking heritage, and that counts for something in a category still finding its feet.
