Changing Tides Lager
A 0.5% lager from Toast Brewing brewed with surplus bread alongside Pilsner malt, and hopped with Challenger and Sovereign for citrus and spice.
About This Drink
Toast Brewing's whole premise is waste reduction: they brew with surplus bread from bakeries and food production, diverting it from landfill into the mash. Changing Tides is their low-alcohol lager and uses their Companion® Surplus Bread malt alongside Pilsner malt, which gives it a slightly more characterful base than a standard lager malt bill would. The hops are Challenger and Sovereign, both English varieties that bring herbal, spicy, and citrus qualities. The result is a lager with a bit more going on than the mass-produced category average: light grain, lemony citrus, soft spice, and a dry edge in the finish. The carbonation is crisp and the body is light, as expected at 0.5%. It picked up an award at the London Beer Competition, and it is gluten free and vegan. For a sustainability-focused brewery, the quality holds up well against peers who do not have the same constraints. Available in cans.
