First Light Hazy Pale
A 0.5% hazy pale from Kendal brewed with oats, wheat, and a triple-hop charge of Citra, Motueka, and Nelson Sauvin — unfiltered, unfined, and legitimately flavourful.
About This Drink
Lakes Brew Co are based in Kendal, and First Light is their alcohol-free entry into the hazy pale style. The grain bill leans heavily on oats and wheat alongside malted barley, which gives it the pillowy body that the style depends on — the kind of weight that stops a 0.5% beer feeling thin. The hop combination is well chosen. Citra provides the punchy citrus and tropical lead, Motueka adds lime and lemon citrus, and Nelson Sauvin brings that slightly vinous, white grape quality it is known for in New Zealand pale ales. Left unfiltered and unfined, the haze is structural rather than decorative, and the hop aromatics are preserved rather than stripped back. For a hazy pale at this ABV it punches above its weight. The brewery describe it as 'big bodied' and that reads as accurate rather than marketing — this is one of the more convincing alcohol-free hazies available from a small independent UK brewery. Vegan-friendly too.
