About This Drink
Van Hunks is primarily known as a conventional sparkling wine producer from South Africa's Western Cape. This non-alcoholic version is made by Matthew Krone — whose family has been making wine at Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards for fourteen generations — using traditional winemaking methods followed by advanced dealcoholisation to strip the alcohol while preserving flavour. The blend of dealcoholised Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon is sweetened with a portion of unfermented Chenin Blanc juice rather than added sugar, which gives it a gentler sweetness than many dealcoholised wines. The nose has strawberry and ripe plum, the palate brings fresh summer fruit balanced by acidity, and the finish lingers. Soft effervescence, salmon-pink colour. Vegan, with a declared zero added sugar. It's not cheap at £14 a bottle, but it's a wine-world product made by people who know what they're doing.
