Chandelier Red takes its name from the famous drive-through redwood tree in Mendocino County. It was Surreal's first beer when they launched in 2018 and remains the one most associated with the brand. The colour is genuinely striking in the glass: a deep crimson red with a light tan head. Citrus and stone fruit come through on the nose, with peach and mango detectable once it warms slightly. On the palate, the fruit character is balanced by a caramel malt backbone that keeps things grounded. The bitterness is moderate rather than assertive and the finish is clean and dry. The mouthfeel is smooth without being heavy. Brewed with a six-malt blend using Kveik yeast and no heat pasteurisation. It is gluten-reduced to under 10 PPM. For a red IPA, it sits closer to the approachable end of the spectrum: not a showcase for aggressive hop character, more a well-balanced session-style drink that the style category suggests.
