The founders' starting point was a deliberate category refusal: Three Spirit was created explicitly not to be a substitute gin or vodka, but to establish its own territory as a functional drink designed to produce mood effects through carefully selected botanicals. Each product is developed by a team of plant scientists, bartenders, and herbalists. Production draws on maceration (steeping plant material in liquid to extract its active compounds), fermentation (using microorganisms to transform those compounds), and distillation (concentrating and separating the result). The combination is intended to maximise what Three Spirit calls the functional effect of each botanical, and the brand treats the distinction between plant-driven effects and alcohol-mimicry as foundational to what it is.

The core range is organised around mood and occasion rather than by flavour profile or category convention, with each product positioned for a different phase of an evening. In 2021, Three Spirit expanded into AF wine alternatives with the Blurred Vines collection, adding sparkling and still wine-style formats to the portfolio alongside the core spirits range. The same year, the brand raised a $3 million seed round led by CircleUp Growth Partners to fund expansion into the United States.

The core spirits range is available through specialist alcohol-free retailers and broader online grocery channels. The Blurred Vines range has a narrower distribution footprint, available primarily direct through the brand's own site. Pricing sits in the premium bracket across the full portfolio.

Three Spirit occupies a distinct position in the AF market: genuinely category-defining in approach, with a production methodology grounded in plant science rather than spirit substitution. The range suits sober-curious drinkers who want drinks that do something beyond providing a familiar flavour format, and the brand's growth trajectory since 2018 reflects the appetite in the category for that kind of proposition.
