Jever
Jever is a German pilsner brewery founded in 1848 in the North Sea coastal town of Jever, Friesland, producing beer defined by an unusually bitter hop character that has been the brand's signature since 1934.
The bitterness was fixed that year when master brewer Ernst Böhme increased the hop rate, using the region's characteristically soft water to produce a drier, sharper finish than most German pilsners of the era. That bitter-forward profile has defined the brand since and remains distinctive within mainstream German pilsner. The brewery has been part of the Radeberger Gruppe since 2005, though production remains in the same Frisian town where the original recipe was developed.
The alcohol-free lager arrived in 1991 as one of the earlier mass-market AF German pilsners. It is brewed as a full pilsner before the alcohol is removed through a gentle, low-temperature process, which preserves the hop character while stripping the caloric content back to approximately 15 kcal per 100ml with no residual sugar. At under 0.5% ABV, the beer is certified vegan.
The pronounced bitterness that defines Jever's full-strength range carries through to the alcohol-free version. The combination of an assertive flavour profile and a very low calorie count makes it a practical option for fitness-focused drinkers who track intake. Available through specialist alcohol-free retailers rather than mainstream supermarkets, the beer occupies a distinct position within the AF lager segment.
