We Can Be Friends
Sam Ray spent years in the UK craft beer industry before founding We Can Be Friends in 2023. His background — including time at One Mile End — gave him a clear-eyed view of where alcohol-free beer kept falling short. The brief he set himself was deliberately provocative: make AF beer so good that drinkers would choose it even if the alcoholic version was sitting right next to it.
WCBF is based in Bromley, but it operates less like a traditional brewery and more like a creative hub. Rather than building its own production facility, the brand works through partnerships with some of the most respected craft breweries in the UK. This approach keeps the focus squarely on recipe development and quality, while the physical brewing happens at facilities with the right equipment and expertise for each project.
The core range covers the styles that serious beer drinkers actually want. Ghost is a Czech-style pilsner, lean and aromatic. Zeus is a clean, sessionable lager. Hades is a stout with genuine roasted grain character rather than the watered-down version that often passes for dark AF beer. Cloudy Krush is a lemon sour, tart and sharp. Beyond the core, WCBF keeps a steady flow of limited releases and collaborations running — they have worked with Beak Brewery, Track, Mash Gang, Vault City, and Weekend Project, among others. These collabs are not vanity projects; they tend to push into styles and techniques that genuinely test what alcohol-free brewing can do.
Everything in the range sits at 0.5% or under, and Ray has been consistent about using science-forward brewing approaches rather than just diluting alcoholic beer or relying on heavy sweetness to mask off-flavours. The result is a lineup that holds up well against its alcoholic counterparts on flavour and aroma, which was the whole point.
For a relatively young brand, WCBF has built a solid reputation among craft beer enthusiasts who take AF beer seriously. The collab model also means the beer benefits from the kit and knowledge of established breweries rather than learning on the job. In a market where plenty of brands launched on enthusiasm alone, that matters.
Distribution has grown through specialist online retailers and direct-to-consumer sales. WCBF is not yet a supermarket fixture, which keeps it firmly in the craft-specialist lane for now. Whether that changes depends on how fast the brand wants to scale. The collaborative model gives it flexibility, but volume growth would require either more partnerships or a different production approach entirely.
