Dead Man's Fingers began in a rum and crab shack. That sounds like marketing embellishment, but it is not: the brand grew out of a shack in St Ives, Cornwall in 2015, and the irreverence that comes with that origin has stuck around even as the brand has grown considerably larger.

Cornwall has a long, tangled history with rum, stretching back to the smuggling routes that ran through its coves and harbours for centuries. Dead Man's Fingers leans into that heritage with a name drawn from barnacles on a crab claw and branding that sits somewhere between a pirate flag and a vintage tattoo. It works, which is why the brand went from a Cornish shack to a national retail presence in a fairly short time.

Halewood Artisanal Spirits acquired the brand in 2018 and gave it the distribution infrastructure to reach the major supermarkets. Dead Man's Fingers is now one of the more visible rum brands on UK shelves, in a range of flavours that extends well beyond the original Spiced Rum — hemp, mango, coconut and others alongside the core expressions.

The Spiced 0.0% arrived in late 2022, using spinning cone technology to remove the alcohol from the standard Spiced Rum while retaining the flavour profile. The result carries the familiar notes of vanilla, warm spice and the Pedro Ximenez influence drawn from the original recipe. It is one of the few AF rum alternatives with genuine mass-market reach — stocked across the major supermarkets alongside the full-strength range, rather than existing as a niche product that requires a specialist retailer.

The irreverent Cornish spirit of the original shack is still intact in the branding, even if the operation behind it is considerably more corporate than a crab shack suggests.
