Barrel Tea is an Amsterdam-based alcohol-free functional drink brand founded in 2021 by tea sommelier Mariëlle Erkens, built around the practice of ageing tea leaves in used spirit barrels.

The brand emerged from a specific gap Erkens identified in the hospitality industry: a non-alcoholic option with the structural depth and food-pairing potential that fine-dining service demands. Most alcohol-free alternatives available in restaurant settings fall into soft drink or juice categories; Barrel Tea was built to occupy a different position, closer to a digestif or a considered beverage pairing than a refreshment.

The production method is the brand's defining characteristic. Tea leaves are aged for several weeks inside barrels that previously held spirits such as whisky, rum, or bourbon, during which time the wood and residual spirit aromas infuse the leaves. The result is a small range of wood-aged teas with smoky, spirit-forward character, none of which contain any alcohol. The whisky variant uses organic Lapsang Souchong as its base, aged in used whisky barrels, producing a cup with the structural weight of a contemplative drink rather than a conventional tea service.

Barrel Tea is a small-scale independent producer, and its range reflects that scale: a tight selection of barrel-specific variants rather than a broad catalogue. Distribution is through specialist alcohol-free retailers, keeping the brand within a niche but precisely targeted channel. For sober-curious diners and hospitality professionals seeking an alcohol-free option with genuine table presence, Barrel Tea addresses a corner of the market that very few producers have thought to approach.
