Amaro Lucano
Amaro Lucano is an Italian herbal aperitif brand founded in 1894 by Pasquale Vena in Pisticci, Basilicata, whose alcohol-free variant launched in 2021 as Lucano 0%. The brand began in the back room of the Vena family's biscuit shop and has remained family-owned across four generations. Its original recipe is a secret blend of more than 30 herbs and spices, passed down within the family since the nineteenth century. In 1900, Amaro Lucano became the official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, a distinction still reflected in the royal coat of arms that appears on the label today.
The Lucano 0% variant uses the same botanical base as the original amaro, making it one of the few alcohol-free aperitifs in the category to draw directly on a recipe with more than a century of heritage behind it. Amaro Lucano entered the AF market in 2021 in response to demand for alternatives that preserve the complexity of a traditional Italian bitter without the alcohol. The range is deliberately compact: the core alcoholic amaro and a small selection of Italian liqueurs sit alongside the 0% variant, with the AF product positioned as a genuine counterpart to the original rather than an afterthought.
Distribution of Lucano 0% is currently through specialist online channels. As an established continental producer bringing its full recipe heritage into the alcohol-free category, Amaro Lucano occupies an uncommon position: a bitter aperitif with over 130 years of formulation history, available to sober-curious drinkers who want that depth of character without alcohol.
