Tegernseer
Tegernseer is a Bavarian beer brand with brewing origins tracing back to a Benedictine monastery founded in 746 AD, adding an alcohol-free lager to its range in early 2024.
The brewery, formally known as Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee, operates from the former monastery buildings on the shores of Lake Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria and remains owned and managed by the Ducal family of Bavaria. That continuity of ownership and location across a site in continuous use since the eighth century gives the brand an unusual degree of historical grounding within the European beer category.
The alcoholic flagship, Tegernseer Hell, has long been regarded as a benchmark for the Bavarian Helles style, a pale, malt-forward lager brewed to the conventions of the region. In early 2024, the brewery released its first AF product, Hell Alkoholfrei. The variant was developed with the explicit aim of preserving the character of the original Helles. To achieve this, the brewery uses a gentle dealcoholisation process, meaning the beer is brewed at full strength before the alcohol is carefully removed. The AF range currently consists of that single core product.
Distribution has expanded from its original Upper Bavarian markets to reach international specialist alcohol-free retailers. Tegernseer's connection to the Herzogliches Bräustüberl Tegernsee, one of Bavaria's most celebrated beer halls, reinforces a regional identity that purpose-built AF brands cannot replicate. The Hell Alkoholfrei sits at the premium end of the AF beer market, positioned particularly well for fitness-focused drinkers who want a lager carrying genuine centuries-old Bavarian brewing heritage.
