Abstinence
Abstinence is an alcohol-free botanical spirits brand founded in Cape Town, South Africa in 2020 by Pierre Strydom and Stefan Coetzee, making it the country's first alcohol-free spirit brand. Also trading as Abstinence Spirits, the brand was created to produce drinks that offer the depth of flavour found in traditional spirits.
Production uses hydro-distillation, in which plant botanicals are distilled using water, alongside maceration, vapour infusion, and hydrosols. Individual batches are made using a bespoke single-batch distillation process. The botanicals featured across the range include African Wormwood, Buchu, Fynbos, and Rose Geranium.
The portfolio spans alcohol-free white and dark spirits, including gin alternatives, alongside bittersweet aperitifs and ready-to-pour spritzes. In 2023, a line of ready-to-drink spritzes was added. One of the brand's aperitifs is formulated as a direct 1:1 substitute for Campari in cocktails, an option suited to sober-curious drinkers who want to recreate familiar aperitivo-style serves.
Abstinence runs a 'Bees and Biomes' social responsibility project, directing 1% of monthly sales to the protection and restoration of the Fynbos Biome, in partnership with The African Wild Bee Institute.
The brand has expanded from Cape Town into 13 international markets since its 2020 launch. The United States became part of that distribution footprint in September 2022.
